Neil Young Announces New Album Storeytone

Earlier this year, Neil Young released A Letter Home, the most lo-fi record he’s ever made. (It was recorded in Jack White’s phone booth-sized studio.) Today, he’s announced an album made on the other end of the sonic spectrum. It’s called Storytone, and it’ll be out in November via Reprise Records.

Young shared a new version of his recent pro-environment song “Who’s Gonna Stand Up?”, which was recorded with a 92-piece orchestra and choir. You can listen to it above. Additionally, you can listen to two other versions of the song: a live version played with Crazy Horse, and a solo acoustic version played at Farm Aid. He also shared the song’s lyrics, which you can check out below.

Young previously talked about wanting to make the album to Billboard

“I’d like to make a record with a full-blown orchestra, live—a mono recording with one mic. … I want to do something like that where we really record what happened, with one point of view and the musicians moved closer and farther away, the way it was done in the past. To me that’s a challenge and it’s a sound that’s unbelievable, and you can’t get it any other way. So I’m into doing that.”

Of course, it’s far from the first time Neil has worked with an orchestra.
