Neil Young: “Fuck You, Donald Trump”

Neil Young does not like Donald Trump. When Trump announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination, Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” was played prominently. Young’s management said in a statement that Trump was “not authorized” to use the song and that Young supported Bernie Sanders. Trump then tweeted a photo of himself with Young and called the singer a “total hypocrite.” Later, Reuters shared an interview with Young where, while reiterating his support for Sanders, he said of Trump, “I got nothing against him. You know, once the music goes out, everybody can use it for anything. But if the artist who made it is saying you never spoke to them, if that means something to you, you probably will stop playing it. And it meant something to Donald and he stopped.”

In a new Facebook note, it sounds like Young absolutely has a problem with Trump. “When I discovered that the candidate first used my song at his campaign launch , my management called his office and immediately requested he stop,” Young wrote. “We thought he had. But now, unfortunately, I understand he is still using it.” He once again noted that he supports Sanders, adding, “I do not endorse hate, bigotry, childish name calling, the superficiality of celebrity or ignorance.” He also shared the below video, which features him performing “Rockin’ in the Free World” while, like YG before him, shouting the words “fuck you, Donald Trump.” Watch it happen below.

In an interview with Stephen Colbert, Neil Young said he didn’t like the idea of Trump using his music “because of the misogyny and the racism.”
