Neil Young Nearly Collaborated With the Remaining Nirvana Members

A few years ago, Dave Grohl directed Sound City, a documentary about the legendary Van Nuys, California studio of the same name. For the film’s soundtrack, Grohl collaborated with Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, Paul McCartney, Trent Reznor, Stevie Nicks, Josh Homme, members of Foo Fighters, Cheap Trick, Rage Against the Machine, and many more artists. In an interview with the Daily Beast, producer Butch Vig said that Grohl and Novoselic nearly collaborated with Neil Young for the project. “Dave Grohl was inviting people in to jam in the studio and we had set up a session for Krist and Dave from Nirvana to play with Neil Young,” Vig said. “It would have been fucking awesome. And I know if Neil Young played with them he’d go, oh, let’s go on tour and play some shows together! It would be like Crazy Horse on steroids. But then it didn’t happen. Neil Young had a book coming out so he was on a book tour, and Dave had to go interview him somewhere else. It’s a bummer, man.” We did get the McCartney/Nirvana “Cut Some Slack” collaboration, though.

For another example of Crazy Horse on steroids, watch Neil Young perform with Pearl Jam at the 1993 MTV VMAs:
