Outlaw Country Documentary Heartworn Highways to Stream on Pitchfork

Tomorrow, the cult classic 1976 documentary Heartworn Highways will stream for 24 hours on Pitchfork.tv. The film provides a rare insight into the world of outlaw country music and features appearances and performances from Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Guy Clark, Steve Young, David Allan Coe, and others. Fully restored to its original picture quality by the original editor, Heartworn Highways will be available to stream starting at 4 p.m. EDT tomorrow alongside a clip from a forthcoming sequel, Heartworn Highways Revisited. Below, watch a trailer for the movie.

Some of the performances include David Allan Coe’s “Keep on Trucking,” “I Still Sing the Old Songs,” “River,” and “Penitentiary Blues”; the Charlie Daniels Band’s “Texas”; Guy Clark’s “That Old Time Feeling,” “L.A. Freeway,” and “Texas Cooking.” There’s also a notorious scene where Van Zandt performs “Waiting Around to Die” in his living room, and brings one of his spectators to tears.

A 40th anniversary box set of Heartworn Highways will be released on Record Store Day, which takes place April 16. The package, limited to 1,000 copies, comes in a custom wood box. It features a DVD of the film with restored image and sound plus 45 minutes of bonus features. The double LP soundtrack is pressed on whiskey-colored vinyl (with a download card). There’s an 80-page book with interviews, unseen photos, and more. There’s also a reproduction of the original poster. You can read more about it here.
