Passion Pit’s Michael Angelakos Live Streamed His Electromagnetic Brain Treatment

Passion Pit frontman Michael Angelakos has been very open about his struggle against mental illness for years. He has publicly discussed his experiences with bipolar disorder and recently founding the Wishart Group, a new company dedicated to providing legal, educational, and healthcare services to artists, with a focus on mental health. Now, Angelakos has shared a new Facebook Live video, during which he live streamed to fans while undergoing transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). TMS, which is used to treat depression, utilizes a magnetic field generator to stimulate regions of the brain using electromagnetic currents.

“This is not lobotomy, this is not Suddenly, Last Summer,” Angelakos joked with a fan. “This stuff helps me write music which helps me not be symptomatic. I don’t write music better when I’m manic or depressive.” He and the medical technician, Bobby, discuss bipolar disorder, Angelakos’ history with mania, making art while struggling with mental illness, insurance, and more. Angelakos also revealed that he “doesn’t remember most of the Manners touring” and much of the time surrounding Gossamer due to his bipolar disorder. He also shared his thoughts on other artists (“I love Laura Marling!… I miss Weezer, I don’t love the new song but I think Rivers Cuomo is a genius. The new Dirty Projectors is really good”). Watch the video below (with the TMS procedure beginning around the 9-minute mark).
