Pentangle Founder John Renbourn Has Died

John Renbourn, who was a founding member of the English folk group Pentangle, has died. He was 70 years old. The Guardian reports that Renbourn was found at his home in Hawick, Scotland, after failing to show up for a scheduled concert on Wednesday night.

Renbourn, along with Bert Jansch, Jacqui McShee, Terry Cox, and Danny Thompson, founded Pentangle in 1968. They released several albums, such as 1968′s The Pentangle, 1969′s Basket of Light, and 1970′s Cruel Sister.

Pentangle disbanded in 1972. Before and after his time in the band, Renbourn had a prolific solo career as a guitarist and vocalist. He received Grammy nominations for his work with the John Renbourn Group, and for his collaboration with the Incredible String Band’s Robin Williamson. Renbourn wasn’t a part of Pentangle’s reunion in the 1980s, but in 2007, he appeared with the band as they received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
