Pitchfork Guide to Upcoming Releases: Fall 2015

Welcome once again to the Pitchfork Guide to Upcoming Releases, our seasonal guide to new music. Four times a year, we round up a list of albums, singles, EPs, reissues, and more arriving over the coming months. This installment covers fall 2015.

Please note that release dates may change.

Notable Releases:

Janet Jackson: Unbreakable (October 2, Rhythm Nation/BMG)

Janet Jackson’s first album since 2008′s Discipline features collaborations with J. Cole and Missy Elliott.

Deafheaven: New Bermuda (October 2, Anti-)

The divisive black metal group return after the success of 2013 LP Sunbather. Read our recent interview with the band.

Kelela: Hallucinogen EP (October 9, Cherry Coffee/Warp)

Kelela’s first release for Warp bridges her mixtape Cut 4 Me and her forthcoming debut LP. It features production from Arca, Kingdom, and more.

Deerhunter: Fading Frontier (October 16, 4AD)

The followup to 2013′s Monomania, Deerhunter’s latest record features contributions from Stereolab’s Tim Gane and Broadcast’s James Cargill. Read our feature interview with Bradford Cox discussing the album.

Neon Indian: VEGA INTL. Night School (October 16, Mom & Pop/Transgressive)

Alan Palomo is back after a four-year break following Era Extraña.

Majical Cloudz: Are You Alone? (October 16, Matador)

Devon Welsh and Matthew Otto follow up 2013′s Impersonator with a new record, partially recorded in Arcade Fire and Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s Montreal studios. Read our recent cover story on the duo.

Joanna Newsom: Divers (October 23, Drag City)

Newsom finally returns with Divers, her first album since 2010′s Have One on Me. In between, she narrated and starred in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice

EL VY: Return to the Moon (October 30, 4AD)

EL VY, the duo of the National‘s Matt Berninger and Menomena/Ramona Falls‘ Brent Knopf, make their debut. They’ve described the album as a love story, “almost a musical,” inspired by the Minutemen’s Mike Watt and D. Boon.

Oneohtrix Point Never: Garden of Delete (November 13, Warp)

Daniel Lopatin announced his new album as Oneohtrix Point Never via a series of clues involving mysterious websites, audio snippets, and a backstory about an alien named Ezra. He has said the album was influenced by his time touring with Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden.

Baroness: Purple (December 18, Abraxan Hymns)

Purple is Baroness’s first album since a tour bus accident that left nine people injured, and the followup to Yellow and Green. It’s being released on the band’s newly founded label, Abraxan Hymns.

Kanye West: SWISH (Def Jam)

We’re pretty sure Kanye’s next album will feature the Paul McCartney collaboration “Only One”, the McCartney/Theophilus London/Allan Kingdom collab “All Day”, the Vic Mensa and Sia collab “Wolves”, and the Post Malone and Ty Dolla $ign collab “Fade”. And that’s just about all we know.

Adele: TBA (TBA)

Adele’s followup to her huge-selling 21, rumored to be called 25, is expected sometime later this year. It features collaborations with Tobias Jesso Jr., Danger Mouse, Ryan Tedder, and Max Martin.

James Blake: Radio Silence (TBA)

We don’t know much about James Blake’s Overgrown followup, but it’s rumored to feature collaborations with Kanye West and Justin Vernon.

Rihanna: TBA (Def Jam)

The superstar’s eighth album doesn’t have a title or release date yet. But we know that it’s being executive produced by Kanye West and will feature “Bitch Better Have My Money”, “FourFiveSeconds”, “James Joint”, and “American Oxygen”.

Grimes: TBA (4AD)

After much speculation, Grimes is expected to release the followup to Visions this October. She’s described the record as “more political and less abstract.”

Sia: This Is Acting (TBA)

Sia’s new album comprises a selection of songs intended for other artists. It includes “Alive”, a co-write with Tobias Jesso Jr. and Adele, along with songs written for Beyoncé and Rihanna.

Chromatics: Dear Tommy (Italians Do It Better)

There are lots of details out there for Chromatics’ Kill for Love follow-up—the artwork, the tracklist, and tracks including “I Can Never Be Myself When You’re Around” and “Shadow”. We’re just not sure quite when it’s getting released. Read “Into the Black”, our feature on Johnny Jewel.
