Portishead's Geoff Barrow's Beak> "Alter Ego" Release Video Directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina) and Rob Hardy

Last week, Beak> – Geoff Barrow‘s not-Portishead band – announced a four-track split EP with <Kaeb, the band’s “alter ego” featuring “an ever expanding and floating membership.” The four-track offering, out this July via Barrow’s Invada label, features two tracks from Beak> (Barrow, Billy Fuller, and Matt Williams), and two tracks from <Kaeb. Today, <Kaeb have released the video for “When We Fall” from the EP, via Pitchfork.tv.

Alex Garland (Ex Machina, 28 Days Later) co-directed the video with Rob Hardy, Ex Machina‘s director of photography. (Barrow scored Ex Machina with Ben Salisbury). The video features Sonoya Mizuno (Kyoko in Ex Machina).

Garland explains the inspiration behind the video:

Beak> has a sound with a specific kind of directness. It’s not lo-fi; it’s just not over-thought. If the band records something which feels too comfortable with itself, they reject it. Rob Hardy, Sonoya Mizuno, Erline O’Donovan and I tried to make the video for “When We Fall” on their aesthetic terms: shot one afternoon on an iPhone, held up to the viewfinder of an old Nikon SLR, then cut as instinctively as possible.
