A star-studded Prince memorial service took place last night in Los Angeles, Billboard reports. Participants included Spike Lee, Nile Rodgers, Mavis Staples, Janelle Monáe, and Esperanza Spalding. Prince’s ex-wives Manuela Testolini and Mayte Garcia reportedly organized the event, held at Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Prolific session keyboardist Greg Phillinganes, who has played on such albums as Michael Jackson’s Thriller, performed Prince’s “Sometimes It Snows in April” to open the occasion, unnamed sources told Billboard.

Spike Lee reportedly said to those in attendance that a Brooklyn memorial to Prince would be held on June 7, which would have been Prince’s 58th birthday. The film director, who reportedly dressed all in purple, posted a hint of his outfit on Instagram earlier on May 11, writing, “Purple beret and purple Kobe’s for Prince memorial tonight in El Lay.”
