Rare Prince Promo Vinyl Is Most Expensive Discogs Sale Ever

In May, a rare first-pressing copy of David Bowie’s self-titled album, which was subsequently reissued as Space Oddity, became the most expensive record ever sold on Discogs when it sold for $6,826. Just one month later, a new vinyl sale has shattered that record to become Discogs’ most expensive sold record. A 1987 copy of Prince’s The Black Album has sold for $15,000, the site announced today.

The Black Album was released in 1994. It was initially scheduled to come out in 1987 as the follow-up to Sign “O” the Times, with promos even being sent to clubs and DJs. Shortly before release, however, Prince decided to shelve the album, going so far as having those promos destroyed. Still, some managed to hold onto the record, making this double 12” DJ version of The Black Album extremely rare.
