Renowned Jazz Recording Engineer Rudy Van Gelder Dead at 91

Legendary jazz recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder has died, the New York Times reports. He was 91. Over the course of a prolific half-century-long career, Van Gelder engineered albums for numerous jazz greats, such as John Coltrane (A Love Supreme), Herbie Hancock (Maiden Voyage), and Miles Davis (Walkin’). Other artists that worked with Van Gelder include Thelonius Monk, Sonny Rollins, and Horace Silver. “I think I’ve been associated with more records, technically, than anybody else in the history of the record business,” Van Gelder said to the New York Times in 1988. Van Gelder was a recipient of lifetime achievement awards from the Recording Academy and the Audio Engineering Society.
