Scott Weiland Has Died

Scott Weiland, the frontman best known for his work with Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, has died, TMZ reports. According to a statement, he died in his sleep on a tour bus before his band’s performance in Bloomington, Minnesota. He was 48.
In the late 1980s, Weiland started a band called Mighty Joe Young with Robert DeLeo. That band evolved into Stone Temple Pilots (after a blues musician who called himself Mighty Joe Young forced them to change the name). Following the success of their 1992 album Core (featuring the singles “Plush”, “Creep”, and “Sex Type Thing”), the band became immensely popular. Their follow-up, 1994′s Purple, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts.
Stone Temple Pilots stayed periodically busy in the late 1990s and early 2000s, though Weiland’s struggles with substance abuse occasionally forced the band into hiatus.
In 2003, Weiland joined Velvet Revolver—a band featuring Guns N’ Roses’ Slash, Duff McKagan, and Matt Sorum. They released two albums together: 2004′s Contraband and 2007′s Libertad. STP returned in 2008. After a string of reunion shows and their 2010 self-titled album, the band parted ways with Weiland in 2013.
He released a series of solo albums including 1998′s 12 Bar Blues and his 2011 holiday album The Most Wonderful Time of the Year. His band the Wildabouts’ album Blaster was released in March.
