Sharon Jones’ Cancer Has Returned

In the summer of 2013, Sharon Jones was diagnosed with stage-one bile duct cancer. Following surgery and treatment, Jones was back on the road by that fall. But during a Friday appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival to promote Barbra Kopple’s new documentary, Miss Sharon Jones!, Jones said the cancer has returned, as Indiewire reports. “I start chemo on Wednesday,” she said. “But I’m gonna keep fighting. We got a long way to go.”

Jones was joined on stage by her oncologist, Dr. James Leonardo. 

Miss Sharon Jones! chronicles Jones’ previous battle with cancer, as well as her relationship with her band, the Dap-Kings. “I’m going to do what I have to do,” she told the crowd after a second screening on Sunday, as the Toronto Star reports. “I’m going to sing.” 

The band will release a holiday record, It’s a Holiday Soul Party, on October 30.
