Sleater-Kinney to Release Start Together Box Set

Attention Sleater-Kinney fans: The trio’s entire discography is being remastered and released in a limited edition vinyl box set called Start Together. It’s out October 21 via Sub Pop. The remastered albums will also be available individually on LP and CD that same day. (They’re available digitally right now.)

The box set comes with all seven albums on colored vinyl, a 44-page hardcover book featuring never-before-seen photos, and a limited edition print. (The individually released albums will be on black vinyl.) 

The albums were remastered by Sterling Sound’s Greg Calbi from the original analog tapes. In a press release, he shared this statement about the box set:

For such ferocious music, it was actually a very delicate process. I found, in dealing with one of the earlier albums, that my signal path and compression, including my Burl B2 convertor, gave me a more resonant, deeper sound on the guitars than the originals. Because the band rarely, if ever, used bass, I felt that this added to the aggressiveness and power of the band overall. I believe this treatment added a subtle, yet important, dimension to the band, and I explored each of the other albums with the same intention. Above all, their music, from inception, stands the test of time for the cleverness and emotional impact they brought to their genre.

Sleater-Kinney formed in Olympia, Washington in 1994. Singer-guitarists Carrie Brownstein (then of the band Excuse 17) and Corin Tucker (of Heavens to Betsy) named Sleater-Kinney after a local road and released their self-titled debut album in 1995. Call The Doctor followed in 1996, and new drummer Janet Weiss (also of Quasi) joined the band for 1997′s Dig Me Out.

Brownstein, Tucker, and Weiss went on to release 1999′s The Hot Rock, 2000′s All Hands on the Bad One, and 2002′s One Beat until their last record, The Woods, arrived in 2005. The band broke up after a final tour in summer 2006.

Since then, Brownstein and Weiss played together in Wild Flag, while Tucker embarked on a solo career. Brownstein has been successful as an actress and writer, and co-created and co-stars in the TV show “Portlandia” with Fred Armisen.
