Solange Featured in Zora Neale Hurston Radio Documentary: Listen

BBC Radio 4 aired a documentary called Seriously… yesterday, which celebrates the life and legacy of Harlem author Zora Neale Hurston. During the documentary, Solange speaks about Hurston’s impact on her own life, and the influence the writer had on her art. She talks about Hurston’s unique way of expressing themes through writing—“its poetic-ness and its bluntness.” Listen to her segment below. “As a black woman and as a black womanist and feminist, I felt incredibly empowered by Zora’s work,” she said. “One of the things that I find really interesting and empowered by in Zora’s work is this idea of breaking down and disassembling the angry black woman. Which is something that I felt really empowered to do in my own work, and I know that she played a big role in that.”
