SoundCloud Signs Licensing Deal With Independent Labels

SoundCloud Signs Licensing Deal With Independent Labels

SoundCloud, the music streaming service, signed a licensing deal with Warner Music Group back in November. Now, they’ve come to terms with more than 20,000 independent labels, as The New York Times reports.

The labels were represented by Merlin, an agency that manages digital rights for independent labels. The deal will allow them to receive royalties, which Soundcloud began to pay last year.

“Independent creators have always been at the core of SoundCloud, and with this partnership we’re thrilled to extend new revenue-generating opportunities to thousands of independent labels,” SoundCloud founder Alexander Ljung told the Times in a statement.

Last month, Sony pulled the music of its artists from SoundCloud after a licensing agreement could not be reached.
