Soundgarden’s Debut Album Ultramega OK Gets Expanded Reissue

Soundgarden’s debut album Ultramega OK was released in 1988 on SST. At the time, the band’s members weren’t satisfied with the album’s original mix and decided to remix it themselves. The project was postponed until last year, when Soundgarden finally acquired the original multi-track tapes and worked on a new mix. The remixed reissue of the album is out March 10 via Sub Pop. It features six early versions of songs that appear on the record. (The band call those songs “the Ultramega EP.”) Find the previously unreleased version of “Beyond the Wheel” below.

Jack Endino, the engineer who helped the band remix the album, and guitarist Kim Thayil wrote the liner notes for the reissue. It comes with a previously unseen photo, and the album’s vinyl edition is packaged in a foil-stamp gatefold with custom dust sleeves. The “Loser” edition will be pressed on marble blue and maroon vinyl.

It was just revealed yesterday that the Chris Cornell-fronted band Audioslave will reunite at Prophets of Rage’s Anti-Inaugural Ball.
