Sub Pop, Merge, Hyperdub, More Donating Bandcamp Proceeds to ACLU Today

Bandcamp have announced a list of artists and labels joining their pledge to donate all of the company’s share of proceeds from today’s sales on the site to the American Civil Liberties Union. Among them are labels Sub Pop (Father John Misty, Beach House), Merge (the Mountain Goats, Eleanor Friedberger), Hyperdub (Burial, Kode9), Kill Rock Stars (Elliott Smith, the Decemberists), Epitaph (Refused, Joyce Manor), and Run for Cover (Modern Baseball, teen suicide). Individual artists donating include Four Tet, Speedy Ortiz, Los Campesinos!, and Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. Merge is also matching proceed donations, effectively doubling their donation. See the full list here.

For the next four years, Xiu Xiu will donate all Bandcamp proceeds to the ACLU, and Son Lux is donating Bandcamp proceeds from At War With Walls and Mazes. Some artists, such as Pinegrove and Alanna McArdle, joined the drive but chose to donate to other anti-Trump charities instead.

Bandcamp made the move in response to Trump’s executive order closing U.S. borders to citizens and refugees from seven predominantly Muslim countries. In a statement, founder/CEO Ethan Diamond wrote, “We at Bandcamp oppose the ban wholeheartedly, and extend our support to those whose lives have been upended.” He also said the executive order “is not simply immoral, it violates the very spirit and foundation of America.”
