Surfer Blood’s Thomas Fekete Announces Solo Cassette Burner, Shares “Treason”

Surfer Blood guitarist Thomas Fekete announced that he had been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer earlier this year. While he was healing after surgeries and beginning chemotherapy, he recorded some songs in his bedroom. Burner is out now via Joyful Noise. Fekete released a statement about the tape:

Sometime between March and June of 2015 while healing from two surgeries and starting chemotherapy, I hunched over my four track and created this disaster. No multiple takes, no expensive mics, no outside direction…just me in my bedroom with a very cheap, bare bones setup. 

Some of these songs reflect on good times, days I’m able to walk on my own, talk, and function like a somewhat normal human being. Others remind me of barfing between vocal takes, wheel chairs, dilaudid withdrawals, and tears, from my family, my spouse, my dear friends. However, like everything in my life, I did manage to find some humor in my situation, and I hope that helps level out all the heavy stuff.

Earlier this year, Surfer Blood auctioned off a series of 7″s of unreleased songs by several artists to help cover the cost of Fekete’s treatment. Downloads of those tracks (by artists such as Real Estate, Yo La Tengo, Guided By Voices, Julianna Barwick, Cults, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Trail of Dead, and Lou Barlow) are available for a $10 donation to help support Fekete’s treatment.
