Tanya Tagaq Beats Arcade Fire and Drake to Win Polaris Prize

UPDATE: Throat singer Tanya Tagaq‘s album Animism won the Polaris Music Prize, beating Arcade Fire, Drake, Mac DeMarco, Chromeo, Owen Pallett, Tim Hecker, Yamantaka // Sonic Titan, and others. She wins $30,000, and in her acceptance speech, she encouraged people to wear and eat seals. “And fuck PETA.”

Tonight at the 2014 Polaris Music Prize Gala, one artist will be awarded the top prize, which honors the best album of the year by a Canadian act. But before that happens, several artists will perform, including Mac DeMarco, Owen Pallett, Basia Bulat, Jessy Lanza, Shad, and more. Watch the live stream below.

Arcade Fire’s Reflektor, Drake’s Nothing Was the Same, Mac DeMarco’s Salad Days, Chromeo’s White Women, Owen Pallett’s In Conflict, Tim Hecker’s Virgins, Yamantaka // Sonic Titan’s UZU, Timber Timbre’s Hot Dreams, Tanya Tagaq’s Animism, Shad’s Flying Colours, Jessy Lanza’s Pull My Hair Back, and Basia Bulat’s Tall Tall Shadow are all up for the top prize.

Last year’s award went to Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend! The prize winner is selected by a large panel of Canadian journalists and broadcasters (among them are Pitchfork contributors Stuart Berman, Jamieson Cox, Melody Lau, Calum Marsh, and Renato Pagnani). The winner receives $30,000.
