That 3-Story David Bowie Lighting Bolt Sculpture Isn’t Happening After All

Last month, an ambitious crowdfunding campaign was announced to fund the creation of an enormous lightning bolt statue in memory of David Bowie, situated near his South London birthplace. It was even promoted by Bowie’s official website. The campaign for the three-story sculpture has now ended, and sadly, their goal was not reached, as NME reports. Of the nearly £1 million sought for the project, fans raised around £50,000 (~$62,400). The organizers said in a statement, “We are still determined to celebrate David Bowie, in Brixton, with a challenging and appropriate piece of public art. We’re just going to have to approach the fundraising in a different way.” They also expressed their gratitude to the nearly 700 fans who contributed: “Thank you from the bottom of our Bowie-obsessed hearts for supporting us,” they wrote.
