The National Compare Trump to Ronald McDonald: Listen

The National’s Matt Berninger is the latest musician to express horror at the prospect of President Donald Trump, saying it’s “like President Ronald McDonald or something.” Talking to BBC Radio 5 Live’s “Pienaar’s Politics” at Latitude festival, Berninger said the prospective Trump presidency unearthed a deep-seated “bigotry in America,” describing Trump himself as “the sickness that’s been clogging the drain. Donald Trump is like the hanger that’s pulling out that wad of ugliness.” Bandmate Aaron Desner added that while some of the band “were big Bernie supporters … now we are all migrating to support Hillary, and frankly I like Hillary a lot too.” Berninger joked that, while he couldn’t speak for the full band, he would sing a capella at a Clinton rally “in a second.”

Berninger also recalled the National’s first meeting with Obama, saying the president assumed they were a baseball team “because we’re skinny and weak.” Hear a clip below, or scroll forward to 1:10:00 in the BBC’s full broadcast to hear the whole thing.
