The National’s Matt Berninger: “I’m a Little Bit in Love With Hillary Clinton”

On November 2, the National will play a Get Out the Vote concert for Hillary Clinton in Cincinnati, Ohio. Frontman Matt Berninger has now taken his support for the Democratic presidential candidate to another level. During a conversation with writer Dave Eggers and Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker on the “Rolling Stone Music Now” podcast, Berninger said: “I’m a little bit in love with Hillary Clinton.” He explained, “She has many flaws. I’ve got so many flaws and I’m in love with myself. But I give myself a break. So I think she’s wonderful, especially the way she’s been handling what she’s been facing recently and with direct power, elegance. I’ve totally got a crush on her.” Hear an excerpt from the podcast below, and listen to the full thing here.

Elsewhere in the conversation, Berninger gave an update on the next National record, which would follow their very good 2013 LP Trouble Will Find Me. He said the band “are deep in it,” but it will not be done soon. He added, “It’s really dark and there aren’t any dick references on the new National record.” Berninger also elaborated on the record’s themes:

It’s about marriage, and it’s about marriages falling apart. I’m happily married, and but it’s hard, marriage is hard and my wife and I are writing the lyrics together about our own struggles and it’s difficult to write, but it’s saving my marriage. Not saving my marriage, my marriage is healthy, but it’s good for everything! And so it’s gonna be a strange record, and I’m crazy about it.

Berninger, Tucker, and Eggers also discussed Eggers’ ongoing anti-Donald Trump program 30 Days, 30 Songs. Berninger’s band EL VY wrote a song for the program, as did Tucker’s new band Filthy Friends. In addition, Death Cab for CutieFranz FerdinandJim James, Aimee Mann, and more have contributed.
