The Pitchfork Guide to Upcoming Releases: Fall 2016

Welcome once again to the Pitchfork Guide to Upcoming Releases, our seasonal guide to new music. Four times a year, we round up a list of albums, singles, EPs, reissues, and more arriving in the coming months. We’ve also highlighted 20 of the most notable releases we’re looking forward to. This installment covers fall 2016. Please note that release dates may change.

Notable releases:

 M.I.A.: A.I.M. (September 9, Interscope)

She threatened to leak it, but Maya’s new one is getting a proper, official release. A.I.M. features a string of recent singles including “Borders,” “Go Off,” “Foreign Friend,” “Bird Song,” and “Freedun.” Skrillex, Blaqstarr, Diplo, and Zayn Malik are all along for the ride.

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds: Skeleton Tree (September 9, Bad Seed Ltd)

Three years after Push the Sky Away, Nick Cave and the band return with their latest album. It’s being released at the same time as an Andrew Dominik-directed feature film, One More Time With Feeling. Watch a trailer for the album/film here.

Wilco: Schmilco (September 9, dBpm)

Last year, Wilco made an unexpected entry in the crowded field of surprise releases with Star Wars. This year, they decided to give their fans fair warning with Schmilco. They’ve shared a few tracks from the album: “Someone to Lose,” “Locator,” and “If I Ever Was a Child.”

Against Me!: Shape Shift With Me (September 16, Total Treble)

Following their 2015 live album 23 Live Sex Acts and their previous studio effort Transgender Dysphoria Blues, Against Me! will return with Shape Shift With Me. They’ve shared three tracks from the album: “333,” “Haunting, Haunted, Haunts,” and “Crash.” This fall, Laura Jane Grace will also release her memoir, Tranny: Confessions of Punk Rock’s Most Infamous Anarchist Sellout.

Cymbals Eat Guitars: Pretty Years (September 16, Sinderlyn)

Mick Jenkins: The Healing Component (September 23, Free Nation)

After a pair of promising releases, Mick Jenkins’ debut album lands this fall on his Free Nation label. It features collabs with BADBADNOTGOOD, Kaytranada, NoName, theMIND, and more. Watch Jenkins perform at Pitchfork Music Festival.

Ty Dolla $ign: Campaign (September 23, Atlantic)

Ty Dolla $ign’s debut album made a case for the release of his incarcerated brother, Big TC. The new mixtape—which comes fresh with election-themed artwork—features TC himself and, on the previously released title track, Future. Revisit our 5-10-15-20 interview with Ty$.

Warpaint: Heads Up (September 23, Rough Trade)

Less than three years have passed since Warpaint’s self-titled second LP, but a clutch of side projects separate it from their new record: Jenny Lee Lindberg released a solo album as jennylee; Emily Kokal worked with Saul Williams and Paul Bergmann; Stella Mozgawa featured on a Kurt Vile EP; and Theresa Wayman worked on a project called BOSS. Now, the foursome return with Heads Up, which was led by a new song called, yes, “New Song.”

Bon Iver: 22, A Million (September 30, Jagjaguwar)

Justin Vernon’s first Bon Iver album in five years features a totally bonkers tracklist (titles include “10 d E A T h b R E a s T ⊠ ⊠,” “22 (OVER S∞∞N),” “33 ‘GOD’,” and “666 ʇ.”) The album was announced and performed in full for the first time at Vernon and Aaron Dessner’s Eaux Claires Festival in August. Last weekend, Vernon held a press conference to talk about the making of the album.

Danny Brown: Atrocity Exhibition (September 30, Warp)

Danny Brown’s spent much of the past year talking up his follow-up to 2013’s Old. Inspired by Raekwon, early Björk, Talking Heads, and System of a Down’s Toxicity, the Joy Division-referencing LP will feature guests and producers including Kendrick Lamar, Earl Sweatshirt, Kelela, Ab-Soul, Petite Noir, and Evian Christ. It features “When It Rain” and “Pneumonia.”

Jenny Hval: Blood Bitch (September 30, Sacred Bones)

Jenny Hval’s Apocalypse, girl follow-up is “an investigation of blood,” and more specifically, about “the purest and most powerful, yet most trivial, and most terrifying blood: menstruation. The white and red toilet roll chain which ties together the virgins, the whores, the mothers, the witches, the dreamers, and the lovers,” according to a press release. It features “Female Vampire” and “Conceptual Romance.” Read “Jenny Hval’s Soft Dick Rock.”

S U R V I V E: RR7349 (September 30, Relapse)

American Football: American Football (October 21, Polyvinyl/Wichita)

They haven’t released an album in 17 years, and now, after reuniting for some reunion shows recently, the pioneering Illinois emo band are back. Like their 1999 debut, the new LP is also self-titled. Check out the lead single “I’ve Been So Lost For So Long,” and read our new interview with the band on the Pitch.

Beck, surprise winner of the 2015 Album of the Year Grammy for Morning Phase, has a follow-up in the pipeline. He’s already teased us with “Dreams” and “Wow”—expect to hear more soon.

Tinashe: Joyride (TBA, RCA)

This spring, Tinashe canceled a tour to complete her long-time-coming second album. Now, she’s back in action, recently releasing the “Baywatch”-themed “Superlove” video. As for the full-length, there’s no confirmation of whether the Juicy J-assisted “Energy” or Young Thug collab “Party Favors” will appear, but it seems imminent. Read “Tinashe’s World Domination Plan.”
