The Radiophonic Workshop Announce First Album Since 1985 Burials In Several Earths

The BBC Radiophonic Workshop was a collective of electronic composers, sound designers, and engineers that formed in 1958 as one of the sound effects units for the BBC. They created sounds and music for the radio, and also worked on the iconic themes for the TV programs “Doctor Who” and “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” The original Radiophonic Workshop was decommissioned in 1998 for budgetary reasons. While members of the original Radiophonic Workshop have reunited for live shows and other occasions since 2009, the collective has now announced their first official studio release since 1985. Burial In Several Earths is an “evocative suite of synth improvisations,” and it’s out May 19 on the Workshop’s Room 13 imprint. (The group’s last release was Doctor Who: The Music II.)

Original members Peter Howell, Roger Limb, Dr. Dick Mills, Paddy Kingsland and “long-time associate composer” Mark Ayres were all involved in the making of the new album. The title of each piece in the album was taken from New Atlantis, an incomplete novel by Sir Francis Bacon. Listen to excerpts from the title track and check out the full tracklist below.
