The SpongeBob Musical Featuring Music by Bowie, Flaming Lips, More Set for Broadway Debut

Back in 2015, it was announced that David Bowie, the Flaming Lips, T.I., members of Aerosmith, and several other artists had contributed music for a new “Spongebob Squarepants” musical. At the time, it was announced that the musical was planning a Broadway run for the 2016-2017 season. Now, the Broadway premiere date for The Spongebob Musical has been announced: it opens December 4 at the Palace Theatre, with previews starting in November, as the Hollywood Reporter points out. Bowie was a “Spongebob” fan, appearing in an episode of the show as the emperor “Lord Royal Highness.” His song with Brian Eno, “No Control,” appears in the new musical. The Flaming Lips’ song “Tomorrow Is” was penned specifically for the musical, as was Steven Tyler and Joe Perry’s “Bikini Bottom Boogie.”
