"The Tide Is High" Reggae Singer John Holt Has Died

Reggae singer John Holt has died at the age of 69, The Guardian reports. The news was confirmed to Jamaica Observer Online by Holt’s manager, who was informed by Holt’s nephew. 

Holt first came to prominence as the lead singer of the 1960s reggae group the Paragons, whose hit “The Tide is High” (written by Holt), was later covered by Blondie. After going solo in 1970, he recorded hits such as “Stick By Me”, the Kris Kristofferson-penned “Help Me Make It Through the Night”, and “Man Next Door”, which was covered on Massive Attack’s Mezzanine

A cause of death has not been announced.
