The Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie Announces New Album

The Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie has announced a new album called Secret Path. It’s out October 18 via Arts & Crafts. The album began as ten poems inspired by the story of Chanie Wenjack, a twelve year-old boy who died running away from the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School in Ontario fifty years ago. The poems became songs on the album, which is produced by Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew and The Stills’ Dave Hamelin.

The album will be accompanied by an eighty-eight page graphic novel illustrated by cartoonist Jeff Lemire and an animated CBC special, which was created, written, and directed by Downie. Watch a trailer below. The proceeds from Secret Path will be donated to The Gord Downie Secret Path Fund for Truth and Reconciliation, which aims to preserve “the history of the residential schools in Canada.”

Earlier this year, Gord Downie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. The Tragically Hip announced the news along with a tour, which concluded back in August. The band formed in 1984. They won multiple Juno Awards, and have been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. The Tragically Hip released their album Man Machine Poem in June.
