Them Are Us Too’s Cash Askew Among the Confirmed Dead in Oakland Fire

Cash Askew of Bay Area dream-pop band Them Are Us Too is among the victims whose lives were claimed by the tragic warehouse fire in Oakland on December 2. She was 22. At least 33 people have died as a result of the fire, and many more are still unaccounted for. The warehouse, known as the Ghost Ship, was a performance space and artists’ studio. Them Are Us Too’s debut album on Dais Records, Remain, was released in 2015.

In a press release, the label and band’s management team said, “Cash Askew was an absolutely loved and treasured member of the Dais Records family.” They continued, “We were in awe of her talent, her gentle kindness, and her creative momentum. … Her passing is an excruciating loss that we may never fully process or recover from.”

Recording artist Joseph Matlock, aka Joey Casio, is among those who are unaccounted for. K Records has begun selling a Joey Casio singles bundle to raise funds for the Ghostship Fire Relief Fund.

I cannot find words adequate enough to describe what a loss this is. Not just to me personally & us as a band, but to everyone who ever met Cash or felt the gentle, transcendent power of her existence, her music & her energy. She was an angel of light in a very sick, fucked world. She was only 22 years old. She deserved better. Everyone we lost in that fire deserved better. This is fucking gut wrenching & we will never be the same. Cash Askew, we love you so much. Getting to become close with you on tour & watch you perform every night for a month was a privilege and a revelation. You were as iconic as you were pure. You’re stardust now, bunny. See you in our dreams. ✨
