Trump Proposes Eliminating National Endowment for the Arts

President Trump is proposing the elimination of the National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities, The New York Times reports. Jane Chu, the chairwoman of the NEA, reportedly revealed the news to her staff in a meeting today. Trump’s federal budget plan is expected to be released early tomorrow. The endowments have issued prestigious grants to musicians, artists, writers, and scholars for decades. The NEA meeting was called, in part, to instruct staff on how to handle calls from concerned grant recipients. The combined budgets of the endowments are about $300 million—a very small fraction of the total annual discretionary spending budget.
