Unknown Mortal Orchestra: “At Least the Nazis Elected Their Leader Democratically!”
Last week, WikiLeaks made public thousands of private emails sent by officials of the Democratic National Committee, exposing the officials’ bias against Bernie Sanders and towards Hillary Clinton. The DNC, which outwardly claimed to be neutral, appeared to have been “conspiring to sabotage” the Sanders campaign, The New York Times reported. (In the wake of the leak, DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced her intention to resign.)
Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Ruban Nielson was among the many Sanders supporters outraged by the revelations. Over the weekend, he tweeted, “If @BernieSanders hadn’t had two political parties and the entire mainstream media against him he would be on the path to the white house rn.” He continued, “they used Bernie to mobilize people like me and get us enrolled and now the guilt trip comes in ‘vote for Hillary or the nazis win.’” Yesterday, he criticized Hillary Clinton, tweeting, “I just haven’t seen anything about Hillary I like and a lot I don’t.” He also said that the Democratic Party conspired to ensure her presidential candidacy: “[Sanders’] own party plotted against him. It was illegal.”
Today, Nielson has continued his criticism of the Democratic Party. He began, “If the left was capable of uniting we’d have a chance but I dont see a lot of forgiveness/empathy, just righteousness.Unity is the only hope.” He then wrote, “the DNC fucked us. It wasn’t their job to prescribe us a leader. They ruined the democratic process. Can the people hope to fix it?” He added, “Im ashamed to be registered as a Democrat. At least the nazis elected their leader democratically!” Nielson later clarified that by “nazis,” he meant “Trump supporters.”
