Watch Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic Discuss Support for Libertarian Gary Johnson, New Voting System

With the U.S. presidential election just weeks away, former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic is making a concerted effort to educate voters about their options. Recently, he sat down with Kennedy on Fox Business to discuss various voting systems, as well as his support of Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson (former Governor of New Mexico). Novoselic’s main argument in the segment is that the United States should adopt a ranked-choice voting system.

Ranked-choice is a form of runoff voting, where voters list their favorite candidates in order of preference. There are then several rounds of voting until one candidate accrues enough of the general vote (for example, 50 percent) to win the election. With each round, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated until there is a winner. As candidates are eliminated, votes are redistributed based on each particular person’s preference. So, for example, if your favorite candidate (Candidate A) is knocked out after the first round, Candidate B takes your vote in the next round, and so on.

Novoselic offered his own explainer of ranked-choice voting, likening it to a rating system: “If you’re super freaked out about Donald Trump, then you get, like, five red hats, OK? If you’re only halfway freaked out, you get, like, two or three red hats. And if you’re freaked out about Hillary Clinton getting elected, then you get five pantsuits, or, like, two, so it’s like a rating system.”

Novoselic also advocated for ranked-choice voting in an interview with The Portland Press Herald. Watch his Fox Business interview here, and see his Press Herald interview below. Earlier in the summer, Novoselic discussed his support for Johnson with Kennedy.
