Wu-Tang Associated Rapper Sues TMZ For Falsely Reporting That He Cut Off His Own Penis

A bizarre story surfaced in 2014 when TMZ reported that a Wu-Tang Clan affiliated rapper cut off his own penis and jumped off a building. According to The Hollywood Reporter, TMZ’s story initially identified Marques “Andre Roxx” Johnson as the man in question. It was later updated, instead identifying the man as rapper Andre “Christ Bearer” Johnson. Andre Roxx has filed a defamation lawsuit against TMZ for mistakenly reporting that he cut off his penis and attempted suicide.

According to the complaint, filed today in Delaware federal court, “TMZ’s original, inaccurate story immediately spread across the internet and to television and radio news.” According to THR, publications including BET.com, USA Today, and Extra subsequently reported Andre Roxx’s name in connection to the story. The parent companies of each publication and media outlet have been named as co-defendants with TMZ (including Warner Bros., Viacom, Gannet, and iHeartMedia).

Andre Roxx reportedly said he was in prison when the story came out and was “forced to go into protective custody because other inmates began harassing him.” He also said the publicity has negatively impacted his music career.

Christ Bearer was one-half of Northstar, a duo who were signed to Wu-Tang’s label and had their 2004 album produced by RZA under his Bobby Digital alias. According to THR, Andre Roxx was associated with the Wu-Tang Clan-affiliated outfit Killa Beez. The Wu-Tang Clan themselves reportedly posted (and deleted) a statement disavowing any affiliation with Andre Roxx.

When asked about Christ Bearer cutting off his own penis, RZA responded, “The story—what he did—is incredible. That shit sound mythical.”
