XXXTentacion Is Out of Jail (For Now)

XXXTentacion is out of jail after nearly six months, his manager confirmed to Pitchfork today. According to court records, earlier this week in Broward County, Florida, X (real name: Jahseh Onfroy) pleaded no contest to charges of armed home invasion robbery and aggravated battery with a firearm. He received a withheld conviction, meaning he was not convicted of a crime, and was ordered to serve six years of probation. The charges stemmed from an alleged incident in November 2015. (For more background on Onfroy’s legal troubles, read “XXXTentacion Is Blowing Up Behind Bars. Should He Be?” on the Pitch.)

Onfroy is still scheduled for a May 1 trial hearing in nearby Miami-Dade County, according to court records. There he is charged with aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, domestic battery by strangulation, false imprisonment, and witness-tampering. He has pleaded not guilty in that case. He was granted a $50,000 bond on those charges in December, but had been imprisoned in Broward County for violating the terms of a prior house arrest.

Onfroy took to Periscope to announce his freedom. As HipHopDX points out, he also announced three solo projects in the works, titled 17, I Need Jesus, and Revenge

On March 2, the EMPIRE label announced in a press release that it would release XXXTentacion’s debut album, Bad Vibes, “this spring.” Last night, the label posted a photo of X on Instagram. Update (1:22 p.m.): EMPIRE founder and CEO Ghazi Shami told Pitchfork in a statement: “XXXTentacion is a unique talent and we’re excited to be in partnership with him and helping him bring his vision to life.”

While Onfroy was incarcerated, his 2015 song “Look at Me!” became a viral hit, peaking (so far) at No. 61 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. In a new interview with Miami’s 103.5 The Beat, X went after Drake, addressing a perception that More Life’s “KMT” borrows the “Look at Me!” flow. “He is not a man,” Onfroy said of Drake, as XXL notes. “I think he’s a bitch, that’s a bitch move.”
