Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) Shares "NO Colonial Fiction", Reacts to Paris Attacks

Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) has shared a new song called “NO Colonial Fiction” following last night’s attacks in Paris. The song’s cover art features the face of Tamir Rice, the 12-year-old boy who was shot dead by a Cleveland police officer in 2014. In addition to the song, Bey participated in an interview with journalist Ferrari Sheppard, during which he discussed the attacks, as well as police violence. At the beginning of the interview, Bey says, “None of this stuff is separated. Everything from Tamir Rice to Paris shootings to what’s happening to the students in the University of Missouri…to what I’ve been experiencing in the negative in South Africa. It’s all connected. It’s all the same thing.”

He then urges people to be vocal on social media: “I need anybody, anybody with a Twitter account, Facebook, whatever: This is the time to be talking about the dignity and nobility of being a human being, not a machine.”

He later talks about ISIS, which has claimed responsibility for the attacks: “A big giant ‘fuck off‘ to ISIS. You don’t represent nothing about Islam or nothing about the Prophet.”

“NO Colonial Fiction” will appear on Bey’s upcoming mixtape The Human Being (My Favorite Band), according to A Country Called Earth.
