Velvet Underground Third Album 45th Anniversary Box Set Contains Unreleased 1969 VU Fourth Album
The Velvet Underground have announced a 45th anniversary, “super deluxe” edition of their 1969 self-titled album, which includes 65 tracks over six CDs. It’s out November 24 via Polydor. Check out the full tracklist below. The edition comes in a case-bound book, and includes liner notes by Rolling Stone writer David Fricke.
The first disc contains a remastered stereo mix of the album as done by MGM house engineer Luis Pastor “Val” Valentin. The second contains “the Closet Mix”, described by Lou Reed as a version that “get directly to somebody, unfiltered… So, if you listen to the record, it’s like sitting across from you.” (This version was included on the album’s original pressing, though it was later replaced by an alternate Valentin mix.) The third disc contains the “promotional mono mix,” including a mono mix of the “What Goes On” b/w “Jesus” single.
The fourth disc, however, may be of the most interest. It contains a version of the Velvet Underground’s unreleased fourth album, which was recorded in October 1969 to get out of the band’s contract with MGM. Several of its songs ended up on the band’s eventual fourth album, Loaded, and Reed’s Transformer solo album. This disc will contain 10 previously unreleased mixes.
Discs five and six include the band’s performances at San Francisco club The Matrix on November 26 and 27, 1969. They’ve been mixed from the original multi-track recordings made by club manager Peter Abram. All of those mixes are previously unreleased, while some of the performances have never been released at all. There’s a version of “Sister Ray” that’s 37 minutes long, and one of “There She Goes Again” that includes a reference to Marvin Gaye’s “Hitch Hike”.
The Valentin mix will also be released separately as a single-disc CD. There will also be a two-disc edition that includes the Valentin mix and a 12 track “best of” the performances at The Matrix.
