Ed Droste Offers Guide to Pretending to Be “White, Straight, Married, Religious Folk” When Calling Republican Senators

Grizzly Bear’s Ed Droste has advised fans on how to call Republican senators to protest Trump’s cabinet. “Republicans generally represent and primarily care only about white, straight religious people (read: Christian, maybe Catholic),” he wrote on Instagram. “So when calling a senator make sure to emphasize those elements of your life so they actually give a shit!” He light-heartedly recommends choosing “white names like Chad or McKenzie,” and then offers a sample script, which begins, “Hello my name is Buck White, I’m a father of two and recently moved to North Carolina for a job in Hillsboro.” See the full post below. “I had to practice a few times to shake off the gay,” he concludes, “but trust, with a little work, we can all pass for white, straight, married religious folk!”

Commenting on the post, Amber Coffman wrote:

This is pretty funny but I worry that this kind of thing could undermine us. Surely there are lots of “down home” midwestern Christian families also making these calls. But I sort of feel like the power in fighting is in being unapologetically ourselves and demanding to be accepted and respected as such, right? I also just worry about these crazy ass right wing conspiracy people seeing a post like this and screen grabbing it to prove how “fake” or what a liberal conspiracy all the pushback is, rather than maybe realizing that some of their god fearing neighbors may actually be the ones making calls as well. I usually don’t specify much about myself other than that I am a concerned citizen

Droste replied:

I’m not shitting on religious white people , but rather the politicians who pander only to them. I wouldn’t worry but point taken. ps. I think we gotta fight fire with fire! Love you!

Hey Y’all! Hot political PRO TIP HERE!!! If you’re like me, you’ve been calling your senators to vocalize your distaste for one of the mary horrors nominated to serve in Trump’s cabinet. Here’s the tea tho….Republicans generally represent and primarily care only about white, straight religious people (read: Christian, maybes Catholic) with a BONUS to those that are married and with children! So when calling a senator make sure to emphasize those elements of your life so they actually give a shit! Since it’s hard to overtly portray your whiteness over the phone, unless you are great at regional accents, try choosing white names like Chad or McKenzie….Now, if you are calling from a blue state trying to pressure a red state republican, make sure to use your cell phone, and casually indicate you moved to the state a few years ago as they track phone numbers and locations. We’ve seen some republicans flip, so clearly public pressure works! Here’s my little script I used today to give you an idea on how to roll like a red stater! “Hello my name is Buck White, I’m a father of two and recently moved to North Carolina for a job in Hillsboro (note: don’t use a place like Chapel Hill or liberal cities, otherwise that might tip them off! ) I’m deeply concerned about Betsy DeVos for secretary of Education given her complete lack of experience and her opposition to public schools. Both my wife and I are urging you not to vote for her! We believe she does not represent the best interests of our children or of any children and that to us is very unchristian and goes against our faith. Thank you very much for your time and god bless. ” I had to practice a few times to shake off the gay, but trust, with a little work, we can all pass for white, straight, married religious folk! Now go get a list of all the people slated to vote for DeVos (not enough room for all the #s here, but easy to find) and try out your acting skills! It’s usually just a voice message which also takes the pressure off. If you feel you can’t fully pull it off, ask a friend! Bonus points for Southern and Midwestern accents!!!!

Droste was an ardent Bernie Sanders supporter throughout last year’s primaries. He later backed Hillary Clinton in an effort to prevent a Trump presidency. He recently spoke out against Trump voters and the rise of “alt-right” neo-nazism. After posting the guide to calling senators, he also shared a video praising yesterday’s Yemeni shop workers’ strike—see it below.
