Flying Lotus: "Never Catch Me" [ft. Kendrick Lamar]

How many rappers can keep pace with Steven Ellison‘s glowing cathode-tube of a brain? As of today’s count, the answer is one: Though Killer Mike, Mac Miller, and others have tried, only Kendrick Lamar, with his hyper-vaulting flow and embedded rhyme patterns within rhyme patterns, can race alongside him. “Never Catch Me”, from Flying Lotus’ upcoming You’re Dead, is frankly exhilarating, a spew of information with at least four simultaneous streams. Somewhere beneath the spazzing cymbals, the maze of key changes, and the sphincter-tightening virtuosity of the synth lines, a quizzical piano motif repeats itself, softly—a grounding idea among the song’s avant-jazz madness. Kendrick spazzes in his particular, hyper-articulate manner, in which a thought catches him and then yanks him like a runaway pitbull.
