QT: "Hey QT"

As tempting as it is to call the music of Sophie and PC Music boss A.G. Cook “futuristic,” it’s not entirely accurate. Sure, each squishy, hot-pink synth and hiccuping beat they roll in powdered sugar is decidedly forward, and hell, the guys even make a point of calling singer QT, who fronts their new collaborative project, “a sparkling future pop sensation.” But there’s not a whole lot that these genre-benders do that we haven’t actually heard before. Trance, K-pop, electro, chiptune—it’s all there, we just haven’t heard it from this exact angle.

So let’s go ahead and say that “Hey QT” isn’t so much from an unknown time as it’s from an unknown place. Sophie and A.G. Cook are sourcing music from their own Bizarro World of big-budget stardom, a dimension where otherworldly pop personas are less extraterrestrial Barbie dolls and more asexual androids programmed to simulate innocent playground love. (Even out here, though, product placement remains firmly omnipresent, if not practically celebrated.) It’s doubtful that the fizzy hooks and over-caffeinated flirtations of “Hey QT” are a direct response to the rush of teenage vitality in a song like Ariana Grande’s “Break Free“, but hold these two stars up to the light and you’re bound to see some similarities. So yeah, QT isn’t exactly from the future, she’s just come from her parallel universe to let everyone know there is another way to make dizzy, love-soaked pop hits.
