Twerps: "I Don’t Mind"

The second song from Twerps‘ upcoming Range Anxiety opens like a slacker credo: a just-awoke tempo plods around groggily as the guitar barely bothers to sync up with the drums and bass. “I don’t mind if you stay, I don’t mind if you go,” Marty Frawley sings, sleepy-eyed, as though he can’t quite remember the words to the Clash song that’s stuck in his head. But it takes real chops to sound so charmingly lackadaisical, and despite their adolescent name, this Melbourne quartet are wilier than you might think, with a sharp sense of melody and more than a few tricks up their frayed sleeves. As “I Don’t Mind” proceeds, you barely notice the pulse quickening, the volume increasing, the performances growing more and more emphatic. It swells and fades, staggering but surefooted, as Twerps turn the song inside out and upside down to create an ode to indecision that sounds gloriously decisive.
