7 Albums Out Today You Should Listen to Now: Band of Horses, Garbage, Nite Jewel, and More

With so much good music being released all the time, it can be hard to determine what to listen to first. Every week, Pitchfork offers a run-down of significant new releases available on streaming services. This week’s batch includes Band of Horses, Garbage, Nite Jewel, Peter Bjorn and John, Alexis Taylor, Allen Toussaint, and Dan Lissvik.

Band of Horses: Why Are You OK [Interscope]

Band of Horses’ follow-up to 2012’s Mirage Rock was produced by Grandaddy’s Jason Lytle. Frontman Ben Bridwell revealed that he wrote many of the demos for the new record in the middle of the night so that he could tend to his four children by day. The album is preceded by “Casual Party,” “In a Drawer” (with backing vocals from Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis, Sera Cahoone, and Jenn Champion), and “Whatever, Wherever.”

Allen Toussaint: American Tunes [Nonesuch]

Before his passing last November, Allen Toussaint finished his last album. American Tunes was recorded during two sessions with producer Joe Henry: at Toussaint’s New Orleans home studio in 2013, and then in Los Angeles in October 2015; guests Bill Frisell, Rhiannon Giddens, Charles Lloyd, Greg Leisz, and Van Dyke Parks joined for the second session. It features Toussaint’s solo performances of New Orleans singer/pianist Professor Longhair songs, as well as band arrangements of songs by Toussaint, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Paul Simon, and more. Listen to his take on “Big Chief” (composed by Earl King), and revisit our Afterword feature on Toussaint.
