A Tribe Called Quest’s Phife Dawg NYC Street Unveiled
Today, the corner of Linden Boulevard and 192nd Street in the St. Albans neighborhood of Queens, New York was renamed Malik “Phife Dawg” Taylor Way in honor of A Tribe Called Quest‘s Phife Dawg. A ceremony was held to celebrate the new street’s unveiling. It was attended by the late rapper’s bandmates, Q-Tip and Jarobi White, as well as Phife’s family. Check out images and footage from the event below. In a speech prior to the unveiling, Jarobi said:
I see some of my dudes who I’ve actually logged mad hours with on this corner, in front of this store. It’s a dope thing. Like people get murals and tributes to them all over the place, but to have a mural on the very block, the very street that we walked every day? Wrote rhymes up and down this block, battle people, have people come from other neighborhoods to battle me and Phife—you know, all kinds of stuff.
Earlier this month, Tribe released their sixth (and final) studio album, We got it from Here… Thank You 4 Your service, which featured verses Phife recorded before his passing. In the recently released music video for “We the People…” a mural of Phife Dawg comes to life to deliver his part of the song. The group also honored Phife during their performance on “Saturday Night Live,” where a Phife banner was lowered while a recording of his verse played.
