Against Me!'s Laura Jane Grace Burns Birth Certificate at North Carolina Show

Last night, Against Me! singer Laura Jane Grace performed in Durham, North Carolina, as “a form of protest” against the state’s House Bill 2. The bill prohibits transgender people from using bathrooms and locker rooms that do not match the “biological sex” listed on their birth certificate, which has prompted artists including Bruce Springsteen and Ringo Starr to cancel shows in the state. Grace, instead, promised to “create an event around the show,” which is precisely what she did: As Consequence of Sound points out, the singer took a moment during the set to publicly burn her birth certificate. “Goodbye, gender,” she said. Watch fan footage below.

I guess gender really is over since @LauraJaneGrace said goodbye to gender! #genderisover pic.twitter.com/EHXZJbMnM2
