Allo Darlin’ Call It Quits

Allo Darlin’, the British-based band who released a string of indie-pop albums on Fortuna POP! and Slumberland, will split at the end of the year. They’ll play a final show at London Scala on December 11. “After eight years of playing, laughing, driving, dancing, singing and generally having the time of our lives, we are calling it a day,” they wrote on Facebook. The four-piece released their debut, self-titled LP in 2010, embedding themselves into the heart of London’s twee-pop scene. Australian singer Elizabeth Morris, who has also played in Tender Trap, sang wistful melodies while strumming a ukelele. After the debut’s release, she moved to Italy to teach English; her lyrics, earnest but playful, are characterized by intimate observations of her hometowns. The band’s knack for catchy stories of romance and friendship, advanced on their next albums, Europe and We Came From the Same Place, was typical of  U.K. label Fortuna POP!, who released all three records in the U.K. 

In their statement, the band said, “friendship was more important to us than our ‘career’ as a band. This meant that we didn’t tour relentlessly and didn’t let the music business get in the way of what brought us together in the first place: the joy of music and the thrill of playing with people you were lucky enough to call your friends.”
