Amy Schumer Writes Essay Defending Her Beyoncé “Formation” Video

Last week, Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn released a video in which they danced to Beyoncé’s “Formation,” and mimicked some of the original choreography. Schumer has since received heavy backlash for the video, which has prompted an anti-Schumer hashtag amid claims of racism. Days after it premiered, Schumer acknowledged the criticism, quoting the song on Instagram, “You know you that bitch when you cause all this conversation.” Now, in an essay, Schumer has defended her and Hawn’s video, which she emphasized “was NEVER a parody.” Tidal’s tweet premiering the clip, however, did call it a “Beyoncé parody video.”

In the essay, Schumer begins: “Saying I love Beyoncé’s album ‘Lemonade’ is a huge understatement.” She later adds that while filming with Hawn and others in Hawaii, Lemonade “brought us all together.” She explains that her video “was just us women celebrating each other,” and that she never tried to make fun of “Formation,” only herself. And while she believes that the video was meant to empower women, she writes, “If you watched it and it made you feel anything other than good, please know that was not my intention.”
