Anohni Calls Brexit “A Prison Riot”

After Britain voted to leave the European Union, several musicians took to social media to express their fear and dismay regarding the decision. Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich shared a petition seeking a second Brexit vote. PJ Harvey addressed the vote in a mid-concert speech. Today, Anohni shared a note on Facebook addressing the vote, which she calls “a prison riot.” She asserts that Brexit will encourage further international deregulation of multinational corporations, environmental policy, and the “nuclear and weapon industries,” writing, “The EU is also the only international governing body capable of having any significant influence over the United States and its actions. We forfeit a seat at the table of those conversations with volatile power at our own peril.”

She also discussed income inequality, the evils of capitalism, and how U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East along with the recent refugee crisis helped fuel the Brexit vote. Anohni ends her note saying, “Brexit is the latest casualty in 25 years of United States’ criminal foreign policy, lack of accountability, and grotesque international negligence. Until the world perceives justice has been done, no balance can ever be restored. When will those responsible be held to account?” Read the entirety of her note below.
