Aretha Franklin Covers Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" on New Covers Album

Soul queen Aretha Franklin is readying a new record, which includes production from André 3000, as reported earlier this year. A release date of October 21, via RCA, has now been set. The covers record is titled Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics and you can hear its first single below—a cover of Adele’s massive hit, “Rolling in the Deep”, which incorporates bits of the Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell hit “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”.

Along with covers of Alicia Keys, Gladys Knight, Barba Streisand, the Supremes, Etta James, and more, the record features, “I Will Survive (The Aretha Version)”, a mashup of the Gloria Gaynor disco hit and the 2001 Destiny’s Child classic “Survivor”. Franklin also mashes up her own signature song, “Respect”, with Whitney Houston’s “I’m Every Woman”, and takes on “Nothing Compares 2 U”, the Sinéad O’Connor single written by Prince.

Franklin co-produced the album with Clive Davis, who conceptualized the record. In addition to Andre 3000, other producers included Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Harvey Mason, Jr., Terry Hunter, and Eric Kupper.

“Rolling in the Deep (The Aretha Version)” will be formally released as a single on September 30, pressed to limited-edition vinyl.

Franklin will perform on “Letterman” tonight and “The Today Show” on October 3.
