Beyoncé Once Rejected a Chris Martin Song Called "Hook Up": "I Really Like You, But This Is Awful"

Coldplay and Beyoncé are good pals. They collaborated on “Hymn for the Weekend,” from Coldplay’s recent A Head Full of Dreams LP, and performed together at last night’s Super Bowl halftime show. That friendship sometimes translates into a brutal honesty, as Chris Martin revealed in a new Rolling Stone cover story. He said he once brought a song called “Hook Up” to Beyoncé and producer Stargate. Beyoncé “turned it down in the sweetest possible way.” She said: “I really like you, but this is awful.”

With this story, Beyoncé joins rarefied air. Recently, Coldplay’s Will Champion talked about when David Bowie turned down a Coldplay collaboration, too. Bowie’s words: “It’s not a very good song, is it?” To Coldplay’s credit, they’ve kept plugging along!
