Beyoncé Stops Concert for Moment of Silence for Police Brutality Victims

Earlier today, Beyoncé penned a powerful essay urging fans to take political action following shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. “It is up to us to take a stand and demand that they ‘stop killing us,’” she wrote. Tonight, she performed in Glasgow, Scotland, as part of her Formation World Tour. During the show, she paused for a moment of silence to honor the memories of those who have died from police brutality, as The Fader points out. She then displayed a tragically long list of victims’ names, including Sterling, Castile, Sandra Bland, Eric Garner, Oscar Grant, Tamir E. Rice, and many more. Below the names is “And Countless Others.” See photos from the show below. Video has also surfaced of Beyoncé performing “Freedom” a capella immediately following the moment of silence; watch that here and revisit our conversation with “Freedom” co-writer Arrow Benjamin.

Beyoncé’s response follows her sister Solange’s cover of Syreeta’s “Black Maybe,” an open letter from Drake, and reactions from Chance the Rapper, Questlove, Blood Orange, Shamir, and more.
