Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew Teams With "Sugar, Sugar" Songwriter Andy Kim for New Album

As previously reportedBroken Social Scene‘s Kevin Drew has teamed up with Andy Kim, the bubblegum songwriter behind the Archies’ “Sugar, Sugar”. Their collaborative album It’s Decided is out February 24 via Arts & Crafts. Above, listen to “Shoot ‘Em Up Baby”, a new version of a song originally released by Kim in 1968.

Kim co-wrote and produced the album with Drew, Ohad Benchetrit of Do Make Say Think and Dave Hamelin of the Stills. Tortoise’s John McEntire also contributed to the album. The track “Who Came First” is “rewritten from the Broken Social Scene archives,” according to a press release.

In an interview with Pitchfork, Drew discussed working with Kim:

It’s not a sugar-pop record. This is a man who is singing about his mortality, moving on, getting older, and the idea of trying to connect to an audience who’s possibly lost their parents or are dealing with friends going away. Andy’s really hitting something with that. No one’s expecting anything from us. We are the underdog again. I’m the underdog again; people have been there and done that with Social Scene.
